When to use Cat 5e

Data Cabling, or Structured Cabling is the design and installation of a copper cabling system. It is this vital network of cables that provides the infrastructure to support your phones, Internet, Wifi, Power over Ethernet (POE) applications, security CCTV cameras, room booking systems and LED Lighting.

The Advantages of Cat5e

There are many advantages of using Cat 5e Cabling over cabling that is less stable or accurate. Here are just a few of the performance enhancements that you can expect:

  • 1

Fast, reliable and secure transmission of information

  • 2

Offers higher security than WIFI - able to protect data using a physical firewall

  • 3

Lowest cost setup of data cabling varieties

  • 4

    25-year installation warranty

The Disadvantages of Cat5e

For everything that you get when you use Cat 5e, there are some things that you need to look out for. Here are a few of the limitations and the disadvantages of using Cat 5e Cabling:

  • 1

    Restricted to 100m cable pathway at 1000MBs / 1GBs

  • 2

    Higher crosstalk compared with Cat6

  • 3

Lower signal-to-noise ratio compared with cat6

  • 4

Less mobile than Wi-Fi - needs to be physically connected

  • 5

Does not come in a shielded version

Cat 5e is one of the most powerful cabling standards on the market today. However, it is not the most powerful cabling that is available. If you are looking for a cabling that integrates with the latest and greatest technology, then you may want to go with the Cat 6 standard. Otherwise, Cat 5e should work just fine for you. It is less expensive, and the performance is adequate for most functions.
